Flanagan met the Goslings in London when he was a student at St Martins School of Art. Nigel Gosling reviewed exhibitions of Flanagan’s work in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. His wife Maud had been a ballet dancer. During this period Flanagan was actively involved in dance. In 1972 he won a grant from the Gulbenkian Foundation to work with the ballet group Strider, for which he choreographed two works, and in the autumn of that year he took dance lessons with Carolyn Carlson at ‘The Place’, London.
